Is It Just A Rash or Something More Serious?
Contact dermatitis is a rash that is caused by a direct contact with a certain substance, and it occurs at the site of contact. This type of rash is not contagious and/or life-threatening, but it can be quite uncomfortable.
There are two types of contact dermatitis:
- Irritant contact dermatitis
This one is caused by contact with a chemical that is noxious to the skin. Common irritants here are solvents, detergents, bleaches, pesticides…
- Allergic contact dermatitis
Caused by contact with a substance that the person in question developed an allergic sensitivity to. In this case, the substance is not necessarily noxious to the skin, but to that person. In this case, the dermatitis development requires a previous contact with that substance so that the immune system is able to recognize and develop a reaction against it. Common allergens here are nickel, plants (such as poison ivy), formaldehyde…
Main symptoms:
- Rash (usually red)
- Burning
- Tenderness
- Dry and cracked skin
- Itching, usually quite severe and intense
- Blisters
Contact dermatitis can also lead to infections. If the rash is constantly being scratched it can create an open door to the entry of fungus and bacteria.
Treatment:
The first step for the treatment is to identify the triggers and stay away from them. The treatment also consists of using steroids which can be used topically (as a cream to be applied locally) or orally. Cold compresses might also be recommended by your physician. The type of treatment will depend on the type of rash and how extensive it is.
